Open-source software has always inspired me because it empowers people from all backgrounds to contribute to projects that have a real impact. Whether through code, documentation, testing, or localization, every contribution helps improve software that millions of people rely on every day.

Today, I had the opportunity to take my first step into that community by contributing to the official WordPress Translation Project, helping translate WooCommerce into Spanish (Costa Rica).

For my first contribution session, I translated more than 120 strings, covering a wide range of technical and user-facing content. This included system messages, administrative settings, REST API descriptions, payment methods, refunds, shipping configuration, customer account management, and various backend components that contribute to a better experience for Spanish-speaking users.

Although translation may seem like a small task compared to software development, localization plays a critical role in making open-source platforms accessible to people around the world. Every translated string helps create a more intuitive, consistent, and user-friendly experience, allowing businesses and developers to work with software in their native language.

This experience also gave me a deeper understanding of WooCommerce’s internal architecture. Many of the strings I worked on were part of APIs, validation rules, configuration options, and administrative workflows that are rarely visible to end users but are essential for the platform’s functionality. Ensuring that technical terminology remained accurate while preserving variables, placeholders, HTML tags, and formatting required careful attention to detail.

Contributing to WordPress has been a rewarding experience and an excellent opportunity to give back to a community whose software has powered countless websites and businesses worldwide. I hope this is just the beginning of many future contributions, not only through translations but also through documentation, testing, and other open-source initiatives.
